longers gears *could* be beneficial for drag racing.  Depends on whether the shorter gears requires an extra shift, and traction off the launch, etc.  Assuming perfect traction, the correct solution requires integrating power output over the rpm bands.  Given that the close ratio gear set shortens the rpm ranges you run through for each gear (vs. a rear end gear which does not modify that transmission ratios), a car with peaky high rpm power may see faster times with close ratio gears. Certain cars will be faster with stock ratio transmission gears & shorter rear end gears, certain cars will be faster with close ratio transmission gears & stock rear end gears.
